HISTORY
The Assembly of Christians first met for fellowship and worship in Lambertville, Michigan, in May of 1977 with twelve people in attendance while we formed a constitution for incorporation. That incorporation as the Assembly of Christians Church happened in June of 1978 and took on all of the biblical responsibilities of a local congregation. Our name was derived with a desire for simplicity from two verses: Hebrews 10:25 (“Forsake not the assembling of yourselves together”) and Acts 11:26 (”The disciples were first called Christians in Antioch”).
Initially, we met in a home in Lambertville, Michigan, but we quickly outgrew the space. For a few years we rented various facilities in Toledo, Ohio and Erie, Michigan. By 1984, we were able to buy our first building in Toledo, Ohio on Meteor Avenue, which we occupied for 20 years. Then in 2004, a worship building became available in Lambertville, which remains our current location.
We originally formed as an independent Baptist church, but became a reformed baptist church in 1989 as we became convinced of the doctrines of grace as articulated in the Protestant Reformation of the 16th Century. These doctrines of grace include the five solas and the five points commonly connected with John Calvin, although he did not compose them. More information about our core beliefs is available here (link to Beliefs page).
Then in 2000, we entered into fellowship with F.I.R.E., the “Fellowship of Independent Reformed Evangelicals,” an international group of reformed baptist churches of like mind (and not a denomination). We embrace the theme of “In Essentials Unity; in non-essentials liberty; in all things charity or love.”
We welcome all true believers in Christ to join with us!
